Citi, Johnson & Johnson Eye Hillsborough County for Major Expansion, Shared Services Headquarters

CitiHillsborough County had an outstanding first quarter of job growth news. In February, the county approved an incentive package that would allow it to compete for an additional 1,163 jobs and $90 million in capital investment from Citi, which already has over 5,000 employees at its Tampa campus. A few weeks later, Hillsborough County approved an incentive package to help recruit Johnson & Johnson’s new shared services headquarters operation. Combined, the two deals could bring up to 1800 new jobs paying an average wage of $75,000 to the area, along with more than $113 million in capital investment.

In other expansion and recruitment news, Tampa and Hillsborough County got off to a great start in 2015 with several key expansions. In January, German lighting distributor SLV announced the expansion of its North American headquarters in Tampa. SLV is building a 75,000 square foot facility north of the airport and doubling its local workforce with the addition of another 22 positions. Tampa Tank, which provides customized design, repair, and fabrication of welded steel products to customers across the globe, is creating 108 new jobs in Hillsborough County at two locations in Ybor City and Port Redwing. The new manufacturing jobs will pay 150% of Florida’s average wage. The company is investing over $18 million to retrofit an existing 40,000 square foot facility and build a brand new 120,000 square foot structure at Port Redwing.

The information security business is booming in Tampa as well. Two locally headquartered technology companies in the cybersecurity space, Sunera LLC and ReliaQuest, announced expansions and a combined 95 new high wage information technology jobs.

Last month, pharma company Xcelience, also headquartered in Tampa, announced that it would add 100 new jobs and retain 100 existing ones. The jobs, which include manufacturing as well as pharmaceutical development positions, will be spread across two locations in Tampa and Hillsborough County. Xcelience is investing $9 million in a 6,000 square foot expansion of its existing manufacturing operation as well as a new 71,000 square foot location to house its headquarters and pharmaceutical development operation.
