Tampa and Hillsborough County have become a go-to market for the testing and deployment of new, advanced technologies. Our advanced telecommunications assets include over 100 digital switching centers, a widespread Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN), 18 permanent POPs with dozens of virtual POPs, diverse routing capabilities, and SONET. These features and more have made Tampa and Hillsborough County one of the most connected cities in the United States.
All of the county, as well as parts of the surrounding region, offer the only all-fiber optic network that is available for both residential and small business use. Not only does this network deliver the highest quality TV and voice services, but broadband connections possess download speeds of up to 150 Megabits per second and upload speeds of up to 35 Megabits.
Our community is also home to the highest concentration of certified LAN installers in the country. Tampa and Hillsborough County also boast 25 Verizon Smart Park locations. These business sites ensure companies there have quick, reliable access to the most advanced technology, including voice, data, video communications services, and wireless, high-speed Internet access.
In addition to advanced, powerful Internet, TV, and voice connections, wireless service in Tampa and Hillsborough County is rated highly amongst top U.S. markets. Not only were we one of the first metro areas in the U.S. to deploy 4G/LTE technology in 2010, but the advanced wireless network is pervasive throughout our area and the entire state. This important technology makes it easier to complete video conferences, stream multiple videos, transfer large files quickly, and download and run powerful programs to improve efficiency and productivity. Verizon Wireless also operates a state-of-the-art network super switch in the area that is able to withstand a Category 5 hurricane, ensuring we stay connected.
Tampa Bay also scored at the top among 27 U.S. markets for wireless call quality, according to a J.D. Power survey. We recorded the lowest number of problems per 100 calls of the same markets, with only five problems for every 100 calls.
Our strength in telecommunications is clear through the significant investments companies are making in Hillsborough County and throughout the state of Florida. Verizon invested more than $373 million in its Florida wireline communications network and IT infrastructure in 2011, bringing the grand total to more than $2.2 billion in investments since they formed in 2000. T-Mobile also doubled the speed of their 4G network in more than 50 U.S. markets, including Tampa. In addition, AT&T invested more than $140 million in their local wireless and wireline networks from 2009 to 2011. In preparation for the Republican National Convention in Tampa in 2012, the telecommunications corporation invested $15 million in technology infrastructure upgrades, including the addition of more than 200 Wifi spots.
