1) As a business leader here, what aspects make Tampa and Hillsborough County such an attractive location for companies and talent?
There are many advantages to conducting business in Tampa and Hillsborough County. Before selecting Tampa, we did a competitive analysis with other markets, and I can tell you that Tampa, hands down, outperformed other markets. Since we began business operations here in 2005, time and time again, this analysis has been proven to be true.
First, our ability to hire, recruit, and grow a talented workforce has been phenomenal. We are able to recruit locally from the abundant talent in the region and in doing so, have enabled DTCC to grow. The University of South Florida and the University of Tampa, as well as the University of Florida and University of Central Florida, provide a smart, eager workforce in emerging fields like information technology and cybersecurity. We have also found skilled veterans with plenty of experience and business acumen from MacDill Air Force Base.
Second, the greater Tampa area is thriving, with a healthy business climate, great schools and communities for our employees to live and work, and easy access to a top regional airport – key for any large company, especially a global company like ours.

2) In your opinion, what was the biggest win for our community in the past few years?
In my time with the EDC, we’ve had many notable achievements. However, I think our success is twofold: the recruitment of high-profile businesses and expansions, such as Bristol-Myers Squibb and Johnson & Johnson, and the ongoing work to expand our universities, like the explosive growth at the University of Tampa and USF’s proposed medical school and USF’s CAMLS facility in downtown, are powering business growth and community advancement.

The addition and expansion of so many financial services firms and technology companies has also helped Tampa and Hillsborough to solidify its place as a global leader in these critical industries. Great talent growth coupled with great business growth is a formula for success in Tampa Bay.

3) How does your company impact the business culture of Tampa and Hillsborough County?
DTCC impacts the local business culture in a number of ways. We have shown that a Wall Street company can not only build and grow a redundant facility here, but also develop new products and services. The EDC often uses us as an example when recruiting executives from larger business centers who may be unfamiliar with Tampa’s business climate. We want to see the business community continue to thrive, and we advocate for growth with partners like the Tampa Hillsborough EDC and Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce.

In addition, we think it is important to give back. DTCC employees volunteer over 2,000 hours a year in the local community, benefiting local charities and schools and making a difference in the lives of those around us.

4) Where do you derive the most benefit for yourself and your company as an Investor of the EDC?
The ability to engage with other business leaders in the community through the EDC and Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce has been of immeasurable benefit to DTCC. We are able to engage with leading educational institutions and MacDill AFB, helping us to build a robust talent pipeline. We have also been fortunate to meet other expanding companies and to be a part of their success stories.

For us, Tampa is the perfect size city. Coming from New York City, it is much easier for DTCC executives to engage with business leaders in Tampa and play a role in the growth of the local economy.
