Mission to Mexico City yields strong leads for area businesses

April 25, 2018

A group of 41 delegates from across Tampa Bay traveled to Mexico City April 10-13 to strengthen ties and trade opportunities between our region and the Mexican capital. The mission was one of the largest conducted to date by regional partners Tampa Hillsborough EDC, Pinellas County Economic Development, and Pasco EDC. Fifteen Tampa Bay companies had over 80 meetings with Mexican firms and reported coming away with numerous leads and orders. “This mission was first class from start to finish,” said Michael Ferris, CEO of Tampa cybersecurity firm Abacode. “The quality of the prospect companies we met with and the program of receptions and events was remarkable.  We came away with excellent leads and important new relationships that will help us make significant inroads in the Mexican market.”

Tampa Bay’s local government leadership was also well represented on the mission. City of Tampa Mayor Buckhorn, Pinellas County Commissioner Ken Welch and Pasco County Commissioner Ken Welch held meetings with Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Luis Videgaray Caso, and Mayor Buckhorn signed a Sister City reaffirmation with the Mayor of Veracruz. The mayors discussed the importance of strengthening trade between their two port cities.

Delegates toured Mexico City’s new airport (which is still under construction) and the Mexican stock exchange and enjoyed a reception hosted by the US Embassy and a roundtable discussion with Pro Mexico, the nation’ economic development arm, about ways we to increase bilateral trade.
